The football players do this so that the sun doesn't reflect off of their faces. If that happened, then something really dangerous could happen. it gets rid of glare...kind of like sunglasses if you will. its not very common now. most people just use a visor.
Oh, because it blocks the sun from going into their eyes. it reflects off of that.
